ACLJ Joins President Bush in Calling on Senate to Approve Ban on Human Cloning
April 10, 2002

(Washington, DC) – The American Center for Law and Justice, an international public interest law firm, today joined President Bush in calling on the U.S. Senate to approve a bill that would ban all human cloning.

“This is a tremendously important opportunity to protect human life,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who attended a White House meeting on cloning. “A total ban on human cloning is not only the correct decision from a political standpoint, it is essential to the preservation of human life. While there is tremendous support for advancements in medical science, such progress should never occur at the expense – and destruction – of human life. The president’s decision to elevate the cloning issue in this manner underscores his commitment to life. And, we’re hopeful this high profile push will break the logjam on this issue in the Senate.”

Sekulow was one of 175 leaders invited to the White House by President Bush to urge the Senate to immediately pass a bipartisan bill that has been shelved by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle – a bill that calls for a ban on both reproductive and therapeutic cloning. The House already has approved a bill that totally bans cloning.

After attending the meeting at the White House, Sekulow said the ACLJ will step up its educational and legislative efforts to encourage the Senate to approve a ban on human cloning. The ACLJ is a public interest law firm specializing in constitutional issues and the protection of human life. The ACLJ is headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA and the web site address is www.aclj.org.
