Capitol Hill
(CNSNews.com) - TV commercials airing in his home state of South Dakota
urge Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to schedule a vote on the Partial
Birth Abortion Act.
Concerned
Women for America-South Dakota and its parent organization, Concerned
Women for America (CWA), are challenging Daschle, a Democrat, to schedule
a vote on the legislation after the Senate returns Sept. 3.
"South
Dakota has strong families. And Senator Tom Daschle has represented
those families for many years," the commercial states. "In
the past, he listened and twice voted to ban the horrible practice of
partial birth abortion."
"Now,
he's Senate Leader, and he must choose between South Dakota values and
Washington values. The Senate is ready to approve the ban. But only
Senator Daschle has the power to schedule a vote," the advertisement
continues. "Ask Tom Daschle to stop partial birth abortion."
Linda Schauer,
director of CWA of South Dakota, recalled Daschle's two votes for the
ban in the past.
"That
made the people of South Dakota very happy," she insisted. "All
we're asking is that he use the power of his leadership position to
do what's right again, and schedule a vote."
In fact,
the Senate has also voted to pass the ban twice.
"Tom
Daschle holds the reins on the Senate calendar," said CWA national
President Sandy Rios. "We feel it will easily pass again if Sen.
Daschle listens to his constituents and schedules a vote."
The ad, entitled
"Daschle's Choice" is scheduled to run on cable and broadcast
television through Sept. 6.
Calls to
Daschle's leadership press office were not answered Friday afternoon.
A voicemail greeting at the main number for Daschle's congressional
office invites South Dakota constituents to call his office toll-free
at 800-424-9094. That same number is mentioned in the "Daschle's
Choice" commercial.
